METABOLISM
Metabolism is the chemical reaction that occurs within cells to convert nutrients into energy and essential molecules for growth and reproduction. Microorganisms possess metabolic pathways which break down complex organic compounds to provide the building blocks for energy generation. Plant metabolism contributes to primary production and the synthesis of bioactive molecules. Aerobic organisms engage in metabolic processes such as respiration, catabolism (including xenobiotics), and biosynthetic processes to ensure physiological functioning.
