Irene Stefanini, microbiologist at the Laboratory of Microbiology and Virology (LMV) of the Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology of the University of Turin, is the winner of one of the prestigious Research Grants promoted by the Human Frontier Science Program. HSFP, an international organization based in Strasbourg, promotes new scientific collaborations by funding projects with a high content of internationality, interdisciplinarity and scientific impact, aimed at advancing the knowledge of basic molecular mechanisms in the field of Life Sciences.

Dr. Stefanini participated in the call with the project "The aphrodisiac gut: defining the factors promoting yeast mating within insect intestines" which has the ambitious goal of understanding the molecular mechanisms through which the intestines of some social insects promote biodiversity of brewer's yeast.

The project presented by the researcher of the University of Turin, was placed third among the 21 final winning projects arrived from a selection of 551 research projects proposed from all over the world.

The international team of the project coordinated by the Turin University is formed by Elyzabeth New of Sydney University, Daniel Segrè of Boston University, and Marco Polin of the University of Balearic Islands.

Together with Dr. Stefanini, Prof. Giorgio Gribaudo, coordinator of the Laboratory of Microbiology and Virology, Prof. Francesca Barbero and Dr. Luca Pietro Casacci of the Department of Sciences are part of the research group of the University of Turin. of Life and Systems Biology.
